Hunter's House Pit

You're looking at what's left of a Mesolithic settlement that's genuinely old - we're talking 8,000 years back. Hunter's House Pit, just outside Durham, is essentially a depression in the ground where someone once lived after the last ice age melted. Not exactly Instagram material, but it matters if you care about how people actually lived in Britain's deep past.

The pit itself is modest. You won't find reconstructions or visitor centres here - this is archaeology in its rawest form. What you get is the actual excavation site where artefacts turned up, giving archaeologists clues about Mesolithic life. It's the kind of place that rewards patience and imagination. Stand there and think about flint tools, hunting, survival. Kids under eight will probably lose interest within ten minutes, but teenagers with a genuine curiosity about prehistory could spend a decent while pondering it.

Durham's the obvious base, sitting just a few miles away with its cathedral and castle to fill other days.
