Hungarton Spinneys

Ancient woodland on the Leicestershire border that feels properly removed from the tourist circuit. Hungarton Spinneys is a small forest reserve where you can actually hear yourself think - no gift shops, no car parks full of day-trippers, just trees and the occasional flash of movement through the undergrowth.

The paths wind through mixed woodland with decent patches of native broadleaves. Spring's when it's genuinely worth the trip - bluebells carpet the floor and you'll spot wood warblers if you're lucky. Summer gets a bit thick and airless, but autumn's lovely for the colours. You're looking at a solid hour's walk if you explore properly, maybe ninety minutes if you dawdle.

This is the sort of place that appeals to proper nature-watchers and families after a gentle ramble rather than a destination walk. Kids who like collecting conkers and spotting birds will get something out of it. The elderly won't struggle with distances unless they're tackling the whole lot in one go.

Village of Hungarton's just south if you need supplies. If you're based at Emily's Cut Camping nearby, it's worth tacking on to a wider Leicestershire day - the Spinneys work well as a morning venture before heading to bigger parks in the region. Free to access and no facilities to speak of, so go prepared. Seriously underrated in terms of what it offers for zero faffing about.
