Howly Hill

The walk up Howly Hill isn't long, but it's steep enough to get your heart going. You're looking at a proper slog for the final stretch if you're not used to it, though the payoff from the top makes it worthwhile. From Peterlee, it's a straightforward drive out to the start, and you'll get decent views across County Durham once you've earned them - rolling countryside that stretches back toward the coast on clear days.

This is walker territory, really. Kids will manage it fine if they're used to a bit of climbing, but don't expect thrills or facilities at the summit - it's just a hill with a view, which is exactly what some people want and what others find underwhelming. There's no café, no visitor centre, nothing like that. Just you, the wind if it's coming off the North Sea, and the landscape.

The nearest proper base is The Barn at Easington, about five miles away - a solid 5-star rated spot if you're planning a few days exploring the area. You could do Howly Hill as a morning walk before heading to the coast or tackling other local routes. Allow 90 minutes to two hours depending on fitness. It's free to access, and there's parking at the trailhead. Go midweek if you can; weekends bring more traffic to the car park. Weather matters here - it can get proper blustery, so dress for it.
