Howlers Coppice

You get proper woodland walking here - the sort with actual trees rather than a manicured nature trail. Howlers Coppice is a genuine forest block near Malvern, the kind of place where you can actually get lost if you're not paying attention, which is rather the point.

There's no visitor centre, no café, no facilities to speak of. It's free to wander, and the forest floor is thick enough that you'll hear yourself walking. Oak and beech mostly, with enough undergrowth to make you feel genuinely away from things. The paths are somewhat unmarked - bring a map or download the terrain on your phone beforehand. Allow two to three hours if you're actually exploring rather than just pottering about for half an hour.

This works best for walkers who want solitude rather than scenery drama. History types might find it less interesting than, say, a proper country house with grounds - there's no obvious story here, just woodland. Kids can do it, but they need to be the type who'll entertain themselves rather than demand a play area and gift shop halfway through.

Winter's actually better than summer when the undergrowth gets dense and the midges emerge. Early autumn is lovely - the light changes through the canopy nicely.

If you're based at Up Sticks Glamping or Swallowfields Retreat nearby, it's a natural add-on to your itinerary. Worth the drive from Malvern itself if you're after a woodland half-day. Don't expect anything fancy - that's precisely why it's worth going.
