House of Larg (site of)

The House of Larg is basically a pile of stones now, which is either disappointing or rather romantic depending on your mood. What you're looking at are the remains of a 16th-century fortified house near Newton Stewart, and if you're into Scottish history, it's the sort of place that rewards a bit of detective work.

There's not much left to see in terms of standing walls - more like foundations and scattered rubble - but that's rather the point. You get a genuine sense of how these defensive tower houses dotted the Dumfries and Galloway landscape, built when raids and feuds were serious business. The site sits in open countryside, which gives it atmosphere even if the actual structure has long since crumbled.

Histor enthusiasts will find this worthwhile as part of a broader ramble through the region's fortified past. It's not a destination on its own unless you're fairly committed to the period. Kids will lose interest after five minutes - there's no visitor centre, no interpretation, just history and grass.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though it's worth checking locally as these rural sites can shift between seasons. Allow maybe 20 minutes if you're passing through, longer if you're photographing or sketching. Newton Stewart is close by with proper facilities.
