Houndacre Row

Walk into Houndacre Row and you're immediately in proper old-growth woodland - the kind where the canopy blocks out most of the sky and the ground is thick with leaf litter. It's a forest rather than a manicured nature reserve, which means it feels genuinely wild despite being just a few miles from Winchester.

There aren't any attractions in the traditional sense here. No visitor centre, no marked trails with interpretation boards. What you get is space to walk, breathe, and let the kids burn some energy without anyone fussing about them straying off the path. The woodland floor is uneven and root-strewn - proper woodland walking rather than a stroll.

This works best for families after a couple of days at Holden Farm Camping (five miles away and rated brilliant by other campers) or Beechen Glamping if you want something fancier. It's the sort of place you'd visit for an hour between breakfast and lunch, not an entire day out. Worth pairing with a trip into Winchester itself rather than treating it as a standalone destination.

The real appeal is the quiet. No crowds, no entry fees to worry about, no schedules. If your kids are the type who enjoy splashing through woodland streams and turning over logs, they'll get on fine here. But if they're after swings and a visitor café, drive on to somewhere else. Best visited in autumn when the colours are decent, or spring before the undergrowth gets too dense and damp.
