Hound Tor Deserted Medieval Village

The ruins scattered across this high moorland plateau are genuinely haunting - crumbling stone walls and foundations that once sheltered families now jutting from the heather like broken teeth. Hound Tor is what remains of a village that people abandoned sometime in the 14th or 15th century, and walking between these ghostly outlines gives you a proper sense of desertion that photos never quite capture.

You're looking at the actual layout of medieval life here. The larger rectangular shapes were longhouses where animals lived at one end and humans at the other - practical, grim, and strangely intimate when you stand where someone's kitchen once was. Smaller enclosures suggest livestock pens and storage. There's no visitor centre or interpretation boards, which actually works in its favour. The mystery is part of the appeal.

Historians and walkers will find this genuinely compelling. Kids might manage twenty minutes unless they're into imagining life without electricity, in which case they'll be absorbed. The moorland setting is spectacular - exposure on all sides, proper Dartmoor weather when it turns. Go early morning for solitude and better light; afternoons bring coach parties from Exeter.

Allow 45 minutes to an hour to properly poke around. It's free, naturally. The walk out from the nearest car park is a decent moorland trek - muddy in winter, glorious in summer. If you're staying at Oakmoor, it's an easy drive over, and far more rewarding than the heavily signposted attractions crowding the valley floors.
