Houghton Wood

The woods south of Arundel are proper Sussex countryside - ancient beech and oak that's been here for centuries. Houghton Wood sits in this landscape like it's always belonged, and frankly, it has. You're looking at mixed woodland with decent walking trails that'll take you a good hour or two if you're not in a rush, longer if you stop to actually look at things.

It's the kind of place families with older kids will genuinely enjoy rather than tolerate. Younger ones might get restless after half an hour unless you're the type to turn a walk into a treasure hunt. History buffs should know this land has been managed as woodland for ages - you'll see evidence of coppicing and old management practices if you know what to look for. The paths are manageable but can get muddy, so proper footwear matters.

From Arundel itself it's a short drive, making it a solid half-day option when you're staying at one of the caravan parks dotted around - Camp and Touring at Old Farm Slindon is barely three miles away. Admission appears to be free, though you'll want to check locally as these things change. Spring's lovely here when the woodland floor comes alive, though autumn's probably the best for actual walking comfort.

It fits well into a broader Sussex exploration. You're close enough to Arundel Castle for a proper day out, and the South Downs are right there if you want something more ambitious. On its own? It's a genuine woodland walk, not a destination that'll blow your mind, but absolutely worth the detour if you're in the area.
