Hough Foot Plantation

A sprawl of woodland just outside Peterlee that feels proper remote despite being minutes from town. Hough Foot Plantation is dense, quiet forest - the kind of place where you'll actually hear birds rather than traffic, which is saying something in County Durham.

You're looking at coniferous woodland mainly, tall trees creating a green cathedral effect. The walking is straightforward enough, with paths threading through without demanding map-reading skills. It's the sort of place where an hour disappears easily, or you can stretch it to a couple if you're in no hurry. Families with younger kids will find it decent for letting them burn off energy, though don't expect dramatic views or ruins to hunt for - it's purely about the woods themselves.

The main appeal is honesty: there's something grounding about walking among proper old-growth forest when most of the landscape round here is either industrial or moorland. No facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared with snacks and water. Best visited when it's not absolutely soaking - the forest floor can get boggy after rain.
