The hotel serves as the festival's central hub, a fully realised set piece where you can actually check in, order a drink, and lose yourself in meticulously crafted storytelling that blurs the line between visitor and character.

It's theatre meets music festival meets art installation. Each year the narrative changes, but the level of detail never wavers - staff in character, props that tell stories, installations that reward curiosity. You'll spot it the moment you enter the festival grounds, impossible to miss and frankly brilliant if you're into that sort of immersive experience.

This is absolutely not for everyone. If you want to show up, hear some bands, and leave, Boomtown will feel exhaustingly overwrought. But for those who enjoy getting properly absorbed in a fictional world - families with older kids, theatre enthusiasts, creative types - it's genuinely one of the best things British festival culture offers. The nearest Winchester caravan parks, including Winchester Morn Hill just under a mile away, provide decent bases if you're camping nearby, though Boomtown itself runs overnight.
