Horton Country Park

A proper working landscape rather than a manicured nature reserve, Horton Country Park sprawls across Surrey farmland just outside Chessington. You're walking through actual countryside here - fields, hedgerows, the occasional working farm boundary - not a themed experience. The park's strength lies in its ordinariness. Footpaths cut through seasonal crops and rough grassland where you might spot skylarks or rabbits without any great fanfare.

It's most rewarding for walkers after a big day at Chessington World of Adventures Resort - somewhere to properly stretch legs and let the adrenaline drain. Kids under ten might find it a bit underwhelming if they're expecting interpretation boards or a visitor centre. Teenagers and adults who like low-key countryside will get far more from it. You're looking at two to three hours for a decent walk depending on which routes you take.

The reserve sits within the larger Horton Park estate. Best visited outside school holidays when paths are quieter, and honestly, it's better after rain when the ground's lush. Spring brings migrating birds and nesting activity. Autumn gives you changing light across the fields.
