Horslip Long Barrow

You're standing in a field near Marlborough, staring at what looks like a low grassy mound. That's Horslip Long Barrow - a Neolithic burial chamber that's been here for roughly 5,500 years. The barrow itself is modest by Wiltshire standards, which might disappoint anyone expecting something as dramatic as West Kennet or Wayland's Smithy, but that's rather the point. This is archaeology in the raw, not packaged for tourists.

It's free to visit and accessible on foot, though you'll need to navigate via Ordnance Survey map or GPS - there's no signage, no car park, no facilities. The walk itself is pleasant enough if you're staying at Ridgeway Campsite or Honey Bee Glamping, both within striking distance. Blackland Lakes is a bit further but still manageable as a morning expedition.

History enthusiasts will find it worthwhile - there's genuine satisfaction in standing over a structure that sheltered the dead during Britain's first farming communities. Families with young children might find it underwhelming; they'll want something more obviously monumental. Walkers, however, will appreciate it as a destination on a longer Marlborough Downs ramble.

Go in the afternoon when the light catches the barrow properly. Spring and autumn are best - summer grass gets tall and obscures the shape entirely. Allow half an hour for the actual site, longer if you're combining it with walks across the downs. It's the sort of place that rewards a bit of effort and patience rather than a five-minute stop.
