Horse Wood

A proper walk through old woodland, Horse Wood sits just outside Truro and feels like the kind of place locals know but tourists miss. The trees are tall enough to block out most of the sky, and the paths wind through decent-sized oaks and conifers with that classic Cornish dampness underfoot even when it hasn't rained. You're looking at a solid hour if you potter about, longer if you actually want to sit somewhere quiet and not think about anything.

It's ideal if you're staying at somewhere like Wrinklers Wood Glamping nearby and fancy a walk that won't knacker the kids out completely. The paths aren't brutal - more woodland ramble than proper hike - though they do get boggy in winter. There's history here too, though it's not the sort of place that announces itself with plaques and signage. Just the woodland itself, really, which is reason enough.

The main limitation? It's not a destination on its own. You won't find a café, parking is basic, and if you're expecting manicured trails and waymarking at every corner, you'll be disappointed. But that's rather the point. This is a breathing space during a park holiday - somewhere to escape the carpark circus around Truro without driving far. Fine for walkers, fine for anyone needing fresh air. Just don't expect it to be on your holiday postcard.
