Horse Close

The woodland around Horse Close, just inland from Maryport, is proper Cumbrian forest - the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. It's not a formal attraction with visitor centres or marked trails, more a chance to wander quiet woods without the crowds you'd get at more famous Lake District spots.

What makes it worth the trip is the peace. The trees are dense enough to feel like you're genuinely away, but the walks aren't gruelling - good for families who want something less intense than a fell walk. The forest floor is manageable underfoot, and in autumn the light filtering through the canopy is worth the journey on its own. There's a real sense of isolation here, the kind you don't find five minutes from the car park at more touristy destinations.

If you're staying at Harbour Side Caravan Park nearby, this is an obvious half-day option. You won't need to plan hours around it - an hour or so poking about is perfectly satisfying. The proximity to Maryport means you can combine it with a proper look at the coast afterwards, which beats doing two separate trips. Bring decent boots if it's been wet. There's nothing here to slow down kids who get bored easily, but for anyone wanting to actually experience Cumbrian woodland without the Instagram queue, it's well worth the detour off the main roads.
