Horrington Hill

The walk up Horrington Hill rewards you with proper Somerset views across the Mendip plateau. It's not a dramatic peak - more of a steady climb through farmland and scrub that builds rather than shocks - but on a clear day you can see for miles across the surrounding countryside.

This is solid walking territory. The summit sits around 300 metres, so it's accessible without needing fell boots or serious fitness, though the final stretch can be a bit muddy after rain. Reckon on 45 minutes to an hour up and back depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top. The paths are generally clear, though navigation can be fiddly in the lower sections - worth checking recent reports before heading out.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's the sort of place where you go for the walk itself rather than a specific landmark at the top, though the views across the Mendips make the effort worthwhile. Families with younger kids might find the trudge uninspiring unless they're keen hikers, and the lack of facilities at the summit means you need to bring your own supplies.

Wells is barely three kilometres away, so this works beautifully as a morning walk if you're based at one of the local parks - Cathedral View Glamping or Wells Touring Park are closest. Combine it with the cathedral town itself, which genuinely is worth an afternoon, and you've got a proper day sorted. The location also puts you within striking distance of the bigger Mendip walks around Cheddar if you fancy expanding your hiking radius.
