Horns Reservoir

The water at Horns Reservoir sits like a mirror on grey Lancashire days, surrounded by rough moorland that feels a world away from Preston despite being barely a stone's throw from the town. It's a working reservoir, so don't expect manicured lakeside walks or a visitor centre with the works - this is the real deal, proper working landscape stuff.

What you get is a decent circular walk around the water with decent views across the Pennines on a clear day. Fishermen come here regularly, and the birdwatching can be good if you know what you're looking for. The walk takes about an hour to ninety minutes depending on your pace and how often you stop to stare at the landscape. It's flat-ish, which means families with younger legs won't hate it, though there's not much in the way of facilities - bring water.

Free access, naturally, though you'll need to park sensibly at the roadside or designated spots if they exist. Go early morning or late afternoon if you want relative peace. Midday weekends get busier with walkers from Preston.

If you're based at Wigwam Holidays Kidsnape Farm just up the road, this works as a half-day excursion. Beacon Fell View is also close enough for an easy morning out. It's not dramatic or Instagram-ready, but it's genuinely pleasant walking country that rewards you with honest Lancashire views rather than theme-park theatrics.
