Horns of Alligan pinnacle 3

The Horns of Alligan rise like broken teeth from the ridge, dramatic and properly unforgiving. These twin pinnacles sit on the Trotternish Ridge on the Isle of Skye, and they're genuinely one of the most striking views you'll get from a Scottish walk - all dark basalt teeth against whatever sky shows up that day.

This isn't a casual stroll. The walk itself takes a good four to five hours from Strathcarron, and you're looking at serious scrambling on the final pitch to reach the summit. The ground's loose, the angle's steep, and the exposure is real. On a clear day the views across the Outer Hebrides are phenomenal. On a grey day - which is most days up here - you'll be navigating by feel and faith.

Walkers with proper experience and decent fitness will absolutely get something special from this. Families with young kids should probably explore something gentler; the Trotternish Ridge walks have easier sections that still deliver the wow factor. Winter conditions can make this genuinely risky, so stick to summer and early autumn.

Base yourself in Strathcarron if you're tackling this properly. The nearby Shieldaig Camping & Cabins, just 5.6 miles away, is a decent spot for the night before - nothing fancy but well-placed for the drive onto Skye. The real payoff here is solitude and that particular brand of Scottish mountain drama. It's not the highest peak, but it might be the most character.
