Horner Wood

The beech and oak trees here rise up like a proper cathedral, their branches so thick you'll barely see sky. Horner Wood sits inland from Minehead, a genuine escape from the seafront crowds. It's the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think - no ice cream vans, no screaming arcade games, just woodland peace.

Walking through feels like stepping back in time. The forest floor is soft with years of leaf fall, and the paths meander enough to keep things interesting without being exhausting. If you've got older kids or teenagers, they'll appreciate the space to roam without constant "are we there yet?" questions. Younger ones might flag after an hour or so - it's lovely but fairly quiet, so don't expect play areas or facilities.

There's no visitor centre that I'm aware of, and I didn't spot admission charges, but go early if you want proper solitude. The walk up from the edge is straightforward rather than dramatic, so it works well as a half-day outing alongside a Minehead base.

If you're staying at either the Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or Butlins Minehead, this gives you a proper countryside counterpoint to the resort atmosphere. Five miles from town, it's close enough for a morning visit without eating up your entire day. Best in autumn when the light slants through gold leaves, though fine any time if you want green, quiet, and a bit of head space.
