Hornby Cave

Dark limestone walls close around you as you duck through the entrance to this forgotten cave system tucked away in the hills above Llandudno. Hornby Cave isn't your typical tourist attraction - there's no gift shop, no guided tours, just raw underground chambers that most visitors to North Wales never even know exist.

The cave extends back into the hillside for a decent stretch, though you'll want a proper torch and sturdy shoes. Water drips constantly from the ceiling, and the floor can be treacherous in places. Kids who love adventure will be absolutely chuffing thrilled, though parents should keep a close eye on smaller ones.

Reaching it requires a fair bit of legwork across rough terrain, so it's really one for those who enjoy a proper walk rather than a gentle stroll. The views across the Conwy valley on the way up are lovely enough to justify the effort, even if caves aren't your thing.

For families staying at nearby parks like Hafan y Gogarth or Aberconwy Resort, it makes for an excellent half-day adventure when the weather's decent. Just don't expect any facilities whatsoever - bring everything you need and take your rubbish with you. This is North Wales at its most unpolished, which is precisely why it's worth seeking out.
