Hopewell Colliery

Red brick buildings stand frozen in time, marking where generations of miners once descended into the Forest of Dean's coal seams. Hopewell Colliery closed in the 1940s but remains one of the area's most evocative industrial landmarks - a proper reminder of when this corner of Gloucestershire rang with the sound of steam engines and pit wheels.

History enthusiasts will find plenty to ponder among the surviving structures, though don't expect interactive displays or guided tours. This is raw heritage, left largely to speak for itself. The colliery sits just outside Lydney, making it easy to find on a drive through the Forest of Dean.

Families might struggle to hold younger children's attention here - there's not much beyond the buildings themselves and the stories they tell. Walking groups and photographers, however, often make the short detour to capture these atmospheric remains against the wooded backdrop.

The site works well as a brief stop during a Forest of Dean holiday. Whitemead Forest Park and Bracelands Campsite are both under three miles away, putting you right in the heart of the area's walking country. Allow half an hour unless you're particularly drawn to industrial archaeology - though that peaceful setting might well keep you longer than planned.
