Hop Carr Wood

The woodland around Hop Carr sits quietly a couple of miles from Selby, the sort of place locals know and visitors tend to miss. It's not dramatic - no waterfall, no viewpoint tower - just proper woodland with decent footpaths that let you walk without constantly checking your map. The trees are mixed, thick enough to feel like you've left the town behind even though you haven't gone far.

This works best for walkers who enjoy a straightforward ramble rather than anything ambitious. Kids will be fine for an hour, maybe ninety minutes if they're the type who like poking about in the undergrowth. It's the kind of wood where you might spot wildlife if you're patient - and if you're not, you'll at least get fresh air and a bit of peace.

There's no entrance fee or visitor centre fuss. Just turn up and walk. Allow a couple of hours if you want to explore properly without rushing. Spring is decent when the woodland floor comes alive; autumn when the light cuts through differently. Winter's quietest.

If you're based at York South or Cawood Park - both excellent parks, by the way - this works as an easy morning out before lunch somewhere in Selby proper. It won't blow your mind, but that's rather the point. Sometimes you just want woods without the performance.
