Hook's Hill

The climb up Hook's Hill is short but punchy - you're looking at maybe half an hour from the car park to the summit, depending on your fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath. It's the kind of walk that doesn't sound like much on paper but rewards you properly once you're up there. Wells sits down in the valley below, and on a clear day the view across Somerset's patchwork of fields and distant hills is genuinely worth the effort.

This isn't a destination for epic all-day adventures. It's a cracking spot if you're camping at Cheddar Camping and Caravanning Club Site or one of the other parks nearby and fancy a morning walk that won't eat into your whole day. Families with older kids will manage it fine, though younger ones might grumble about the climb. Walkers passing through the area should absolutely fit it in - the routes around here link together nicely if you're making a longer afternoon of it.

There's no visitor facility or entry fee as far as I can tell, just park sensibly and get on with it. The ground can be muddy after rain, so decent boots are wise. Best tackled in the morning when the light's good and Wells is waking up below you. It's not dramatic or daunting, but it does what a good local peak should - gets you moving, clears your head, and gives you a proper perspective on where you're staying.
