Holy Trinity Coventry

The moment you walk through those medieval doors, you're transported back five centuries. Holy Trinity in Coventry's city centre is one of England's finest parish churches - and it survived the Blitz, which is remarkable given what happened to the rest of the city in 1940. The interior is genuinely impressive: soaring perpendicular Gothic architecture, intricate timber roof work, and some seriously good stained glass that catches the light beautifully in the afternoon.

Histoy enthusiasts will spend a good hour here, reading the memorials and taking in the craftsmanship. The church is peaceful even when Coventry's shopping streets are heaving outside. Kids might find it a bit slow unless they're into spotting gargoyles and climbing the narrow stone stairs - if those are open, the tower views are worth the effort.

It's free to enter, which is always welcome. You can turn up most days without fuss, though weekday mornings tend to be quieter than weekends. Allow 45 minutes to an hour to do it properly, more if you're the type who reads every inscription.

If you're staying at Hollyfast or Avon Wild Camping - both just a few miles out - this is an easy morning trip before heading elsewhere in Warwickshire. Pair it with the Coventry Transport Museum if the church alone feels too brief. The city's far more interesting than its brutalist 1960s reputation suggests.
