Holy Trinity Church, Rolleston

The church sits quietly in Rolleston village, just outside Southwell, with a tower that catches your eye from the road. Holy Trinity is a proper medieval structure - the sort of place where you can read the bones of the building: Norman doorways, later additions, a graveyard that's been doing its job for centuries. Inside, there's decent stained glass and the usual solid church furniture, but what strikes you most is the sheer age of it all and how little fuss it makes about itself.

Walkers get the most from this one. It's the kind of spot you'd find halfway through a ramble across Nottinghamshire, not something you'd drive two hours to see. Give it twenty minutes, thirty if you're genuinely interested in medieval architecture. The churchyard's pleasant enough for a pause, and Southwell itself - with the Minster just a few miles away - makes for a proper morning out if you're into religious buildings.

If you're based at Southwell Retreat or one of the other glamping parks nearby, Holy Trinity works as a gentle walk from your pod. It slots well between more ambitious outings. Free to visit, as most parish churches are, though opening hours can be variable so don't be surprised if you find it locked mid-week. Ring ahead if you're making a special trip. Southwell's the real draw for this corner of Nottinghamshire, but this church is the kind of understated find that makes a day in the countryside feel properly earned.
