Holy Trinity Church, Millom

The red sandstone building sits quietly on Church Street in Millom, looking rather more important than the modest town around it might suggest. Holy Trinity Church is a Grade II* listed Victorian rebuild - the original medieval structure got replaced in the 1870s, which explains why it looks so solid and well-proportioned rather than rambling and ancient.

Inside, it's properly done up. The stonework catches the light nicely, and there's enough detail in the fixtures to keep an eye on things for twenty minutes or so. It's the sort of church that rewards a slow walk around rather than a quick glance - the sort where you actually notice the craftsmanship. The graveyard's worth a wander too, with some genuinely old headstones that tell you more about Millom's industrial past than any heritage board could manage.

This isn't a destination in itself, to be honest. You're not driving two hours out of your way for Holy Trinity. But if you're based at Harbour Lights Campsite nearby or exploring Millom's actual attractions - the old ironworks, the coastal walks - it's worth twenty minutes. The church tells you something about how this area funded itself in the Victorian boom years. History types will find it satisfying rather than spectacular.

It's free to look around, and you can usually get in during daylight hours. Go on a clear day when the red sandstone glows; on grey afternoons it feels a bit austere.
