Holy Rood Church, Ossington

The Church of the Holy Rood sits in the village of Ossington, just a few miles south of Newark, and it's one of those medieval buildings that stops you mid-walk. The church dates back to the 12th century, though what you see today has been worked on through the centuries - the Victorians had a go at it, naturally. The interior is worth the push on the door if it's unlocked, with decent medieval stonework and some proper character. Not vast, not grand, but genuinely interesting if you care about this sort of thing.

Walkers get the most from this one. There's good countryside around Ossington and the church makes a logical stopping point on a circular route from any of the nearby caravan parks. Milestone, Orchard Park, and Greenacres are all within easy reach, and this spot breaks up what could otherwise be a dull flat trudge through Nottinghamshire. Allow twenty minutes to have a proper look around, maybe thirty if the graveyard appeals. Best visited on a weekday when it's quieter - weekends can bring the car park pilgrims.

Admission appears free, which is the way of most village churches, though opening hours aren't guaranteed. Ring ahead or just take the chance - half the pleasure of finding these places is the unpredictability. Kids might manage five minutes unless they're into graveyards, which some are. Families basing themselves at Eastfield Glamping or Four Seasons could easily work this into an afternoon, but don't expect it to be the highlight. It's the kind of church that rewards wanderers rather than trip planners.
