Holy Loch Nature Reserve

The loch itself is the draw here - a proper sea loch with serious depth and a military history that lingers in the water. Holy Loch sprawls across Argyll's western edge near Dunoon, and it's one of those places that rewards actually getting out on the shore rather than just driving past. The nature reserve protects the surrounding woodland and foreshore, giving you access to walking routes that loop around the water with decent views across to the Cowal Peninsula. Bring binoculars if you're into seabirds - cormorants, grebes, and the odd white-tailed eagle if you're lucky. The water's cold and moody even on decent days, which adds to the appeal if you're after something genuinely wild rather than postcard-pretty. Families with older kids will manage the walking fine; younger ones might find it a bit dull after an hour unless they're the type who get excited about spotting ducks. Winter's actually better for birdwatching - the loch fills with visiting species. Admission's free and there's no real restriction on access, though facilities are minimal. Allow two to three hours for a proper walk. If you're camped at The Secret Glen or Hunters Quay Holiday Village just up the road, it's absolutely worth the short drive to stretch your legs here. The reserve sits well with a wider Argyll trip - couple it with Loch Eck Caravan Park's proximity to better-known spots and you've got a decent walking circuit going.
