Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church

The red brick Victorian church that dominates Sawbridgeworth's high street is hard to miss, and once you step inside Holy Cross, you'll understand why locals have held it in such regard since the 1870s. It's a proper piece of Gothic Revival architecture - all soaring arches, stained glass, and that particular smell of old wood and stone that churches do so well. The interior is surprisingly spacious and light, with some genuinely lovely windows that catch the afternoon sun beautifully.

This isn't a destination that demands hours of your time. Twenty minutes to half an hour is realistic for a proper look around, though if you're into Victorian ecclesiastical design, you could easily spend longer studying the details. It works well as a stop-off while exploring Sawbridgeworth itself - the town's got decent shops and cafes if you need a coffee afterwards.

Families with older children interested in architecture will get something from it; younger kids might find it less engaging unless they're the type to appreciate the craftsmanship. History enthusiasts will appreciate the period detail and what it tells you about Victorian England's prosperity in the Home Counties.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - The Wild Retreat at Redricks Lake is excellent if you want something with character - Holy Cross pairs nicely with a wander around the town centre. It's not a dramatic detour, but it's the sort of authentic local stop that adds texture to a holiday in the area.
