Holton Pit

A former gravel extraction pit near Halesworth that's evolved into a proper little lake - the kind of place where you'll spot dragonflies skimming the water and hear nothing but the occasional bird call. The pit itself is the main draw: clear enough to see why it's become a magnet for anglers, and shallow in parts with deeper sections that support decent fish populations. You get the sense this was industrial once, but nature's reclaimed it entirely.

Walkers and birdwatchers will find it worthwhile, particularly in spring and autumn when migrating species pass through. The lake sits in quiet Suffolk countryside, so it's ideal if you want to escape the bustle without travelling far from Halesworth. Allow an hour or so for a gentle circuit, though there's no formal path, so you're picking your own way around the margins.

The fishing community clearly knows about this place - you'll see evidence of regular visits - but it doesn't feel crowded or over-managed. That's either brilliant or a bit rough depending on what you're after. If you're camping nearby at Green Haven Camping or Sunnyside Campsite, it's easily accessible for an evening stroll. Free to visit and no facilities to speak of, so bring what you need.

Best in dry weather when the ground isn't boggy. Don't expect dramatic views or Instagram moments - this is subtle, understated Suffolk at its best.
