Holmer Lake

Water laps against the banks at Holmer Lake, a proper working reservoir that's somehow stayed off most tourists' radar despite sitting just outside Coalbrookdale. It's not a stately leisure lake with paddleboats and ice cream vans - this is the real thing, serving the local water board while offering a genuine respite from the industrial heritage tourism that dominates the area.

The walk around the perimeter is manageable, maybe 45 minutes to an hour depending on your pace, and the view shifts as you go. On one side you get the water itself, calm most days, occasionally ruffled into something more dramatic. On the other, woodland closes in. It's the sort of place where you notice details - a heron if you're lucky, the light catching the surface at the right time, the lack of synthesised tourism infrastructure.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit thin on activities after 20 minutes unless they're genuinely into walking and bird-spotting. But for anyone based at Hay & Hedgerow Glamping or Ted's Farm Caravan and Camping Site, it's a welcome breathing space between days exploring the Ironbridge Gorge and its museums. Walkers particularly will appreciate having somewhere this quiet within striking distance of the honeypot attractions.

Go early if you can, and bring binoculars. The lake's appeal lies entirely in what it isn't - a staged experience - rather than what it is.
