Holmbush Wood

The woodland paths through Holmbush Wood feel properly peaceful, a relief if you've been trudging around Hassocks town centre. It's a decent stretch of Sussex forest - nothing dramatic, but the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. Mature trees, clear tracks, and enough space that you won't feel like you're queuing for nature.

Walkers will get the most from it. The paths are well-maintained and easy underfoot, so families with younger kids can manage without it turning into a boot camp. Bring a packed lunch and settle on one of the quieter spots if you want to escape for a couple of hours. Honestly, budget two to three hours depending on how much you're willing to wander off the main route.

Historically there's not much to hang your hat on here - it's just a proper working bit of the Sussex countryside, and that's rather the appeal. No interpretation boards, no gift shop, just woodland.
