Hollowforth Forest isn't some manicured country estate; it's a genuine nature reserve where the paths wind through mixed woodland and you've got a real chance of spotting deer if you go early enough.

Walkers will get the most from this. The trails are straightforward enough for families with older kids, though younger ones might flag if you're planning anything longer than forty minutes or so. It's not dramatic scenery - no fell views or cliff edges - but there's something restorative about the deep shade and the smell of damp earth.

The nearest proper town is Preston, which means you're looking at a quiet corner of Lancashire rather than somewhere on the tourist trail. That's actually a strength if you want to escape crowds. Combine it with a stay at Orchard Glamping a few miles away and you've got yourself a decent nature-based break without having to venture far.

Admission appears free, which is worth checking before you visit. On a damp autumn afternoon the light through the canopy is genuinely lovely, and the place has proper woodland character rather than that managed park feel.
