Holkham

The beach at Holkham stretches on for what feels like forever - proper vast, with rippled sand that goes golden in the right light and a sky that dominates everything. You're looking at one of Norfolk's best stretches of coastline, backed by pine woods and dunes that shift with the seasons. The hall itself sits inland, a grand 18th-century pile set in parkland, but it's the beach most people come for.

Walking here is the main event. The sand holds firm underfoot, which means you can cover real distance without knackering your legs. Families with kids do well enough - there's room to run about, paddling in summer if you're game, and the beach never feels rammed even during peak season. Dog walkers and serious hikers get the most out of it though. You can walk for miles in either direction, and the quiet is genuine.

Access is free, which is rare for a Norfolk beach of this quality. The nearest proper facilities are back towards Peterstone and the holiday parks - Pinewoods and The Norfolk Brickyard are close enough for a base, though Deepdale Camping over in Burnham Market is worth considering if you want a bit more atmosphere. Tide and weather matter here, so check before you go. Winter's honestly better than summer if you can handle the cold - fewer people, clearer light, and the wind keeps things sharp. Allow two to three hours minimum, more if you're serious about exploring.
