Holehead

The walk up Holehead is straightforward enough, but the payoff depends entirely on the weather. On a clear day, the views across the Lowlands stretch for miles - you're looking at proper hill country here, not the kind of backdrop you'd snap and forget. On a grey one, it's just a muddy slog up a Scottish hillside.

It's a decent outing for walkers who fancy something achievable without needing fell boots or a map, though "peak" might be overselling it slightly. The route isn't technical, and most folk will manage the ascent in under an hour. Families with capable kids will find it manageable, though younger ones might flag on the climb.

The real draw is the walk itself rather than any facilities at the top - there's nothing there in terms of structures or visitor infrastructure. You're coming for the sense of accomplishment and the panorama. On a sunny weekend, the hillside gets fairly busy with local walkers from Glasgow and the surrounding area.

Worth fitting in if you're based at The WHW Hotel & Campsite nearby - that's only about five miles away, making Holehead an easy half-day expedition. Don't expect crowds or marked trails; this is honest hiking on Scottish ground. Best tackled in decent weather, ideally in the morning before the cloud rolls in and spoils the view entirely.
