Holcombe Wood

Walk into Holcombe Wood and the Somerset flatlands suddenly feel miles away. This stretch of ancient woodland sits just outside Taunton, and it's the sort of place locals know well but visitors often miss. The canopy is thick enough that even on grey days it feels proper atmospheric - lots of moss, fallen logs, and the kind of quiet you don't get in town.

It's best for anyone who likes a straightforward woodland walk without the tourist crowds. Families with young kids will manage fine on the main paths, though there's not much in the way of facilities or interpretation boards, so don't expect a polished visitor experience. This is more about stepping into the trees than learning natural history. Walkers heading out from Taunton will appreciate the accessibility - you can be under the canopy within minutes of leaving the town.

Allow an hour or two depending on how much you want to explore. There's no entrance fee that I could find, and it's open whenever you fancy it. The woodland feels good year-round, though autumn when the light filters through the thinning canopy is particularly worth the trip.
