Holbeck

The walk up Holbeck from Dalton-in-Furness is mercifully short, which makes it all the more baffling that more people don't bother. You're looking at maybe forty minutes from the town centre to the summit, following paths that climb through woodland before breaking out onto open fell. The views back towards Morecambe Bay are genuinely impressive - that wide sweep of water catching the light properly takes your breath away on a clear day.

It's a modest fell by Lake District standards, nothing that'll test serious walkers, but that's precisely why families should consider it. Kids won't grumble about the leg work, and the top rewards the effort without feeling like a slog. The summit itself is windswept and bare, which adds drama to what might otherwise feel like just another local walk.

Timing-wise, allow a couple of hours there and back if you're not rushing. Go midweek if you can - weekends pull crowds from Dalton and nearby coastal towns. The weather changes fast up here, so check the forecast before you head out. There's no shelter on the fell itself, worth remembering.
