Hog Cliff National Nature Reserve

The cliffs at Hog Cliff are a proper walk. You're looking at Dorset's chalk landscape doing what it does best - rising sharply from the coastal plain with views that stretch for miles when the weather plays along. It's a nature reserve first and foremost, so you're here for the geology and the wild plants, not manicured paths or ice cream vans.

The walk itself takes you through chalk grassland where you'll spot orchids in summer if you time it right. Butterflies, skylarks, the usual suspects. The actual cliff edge offers decent views back towards Dorchester and across the Dorset countryside. On a clear day you can see properly far. On a typical British drizzly day, visibility drops and the wind picks up - not unpleasant, just honest.

Walkers get the most from this. It's not a destination for those wanting facilities or a quick snap for Instagram. Families with energetic kids will do fine if they're used to countryside walking. History types might appreciate the chalk landscape itself - it's the bones of the area - but there's no Roman fort or Victorian bandstand to explore.

Allow a couple of hours for a decent circular walk. The reserve is free to access. Parking is limited, so arrive early if you're visiting weekends. It works well combined with Giants Head Caravan & Camping Park just down the road - the reserve gives you a proper day out while you're based there, and Dorchester's close enough for supplies or a pub lunch if the weather turns.
