Hodshill

Hodshill is a modest Somerset peak that rises just south of Bradford-on-Avon, offering decent views across the Avon Valley if you're willing to climb. It's not dramatic - there's no trig point or obvious summit marker - but the walk up rewards you with proper countryside vistas that stretch toward the Cotswolds on a clear day.

The peak itself is manageable for most walkers, though the approach depends on which route you choose. Coming from Bradford-on-Avon direction, you'll find yourself on decent paths through farmland and woodland. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip if you're starting from town, or less if you park closer to the hill.

Families with older kids will get something from this - it's not a slog, and there's a genuine sense of achievement when you reach the top, even if you're only 400-odd metres up. Younger children might find it forgettable; there's not much to do once you're there beyond eating a sandwich and pointing at the view. History buffs won't find much here either - it's purely about the landscape.

The real appeal is context. If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby parks like Bath Mill Lodge Retreat or Campwell Farm near Bradford-on-Avon, Hodshill makes a solid morning walk before heading elsewhere. It's free, takes minimal planning, and beats sitting in a caravan waiting for the weather to improve. Worth the detour if you're already in the area, but don't travel specifically for it.
