Hodbarrow Lighthouse

The lighthouse stands on a shingle spit just outside Millom, a proper lonely sentinel overlooking the Duddon Estuary. It's a working beacon - red and white stripes, squat and sturdy against the Cumbrian weather - and honestly, the walk to reach it is half the appeal. You'll pick your way across the nature reserve, past pools where you might spot wading birds, before the thing suddenly comes into proper view across the shale and stones.

It's not a case of climbing inside or touring the lamp room. This is about standing before it, feeling the wind off the water, and understanding why it mattered to sailors. The estuary changes completely depending on tide and light. Come when the sun's low and you'll see why the lighthouse was worth building here in the first place.

Walkers get far more from this than casual visitors. Budget 90 minutes return from Millom itself - it's a decent trek and your boots will want grip on loose stone. Bring binoculars if you're into birds; the estuary is twitcher heaven. Families with young children might find the shale underfoot tiring and the lack of facilities a bit bleak.

If you're staying at Harbour Lights Campsite just up the coast, it's an easy detour. Add it to a broader walk round the nature reserve rather than making it a standalone trip. The appeal is cumulative - the isolation, the industrial heritage, the sheer windswept reality of it. Don't come expecting tea and gift shops. Come prepared for honest Cumbrian coastline.
