Hockley Plantation

Hockley Plantation is a proper working forest just outside Alresford, the sort of place where you'll actually see people managing the woodland rather than it being a manicured tourist spot. It's mixed woodland - oak, beech, and conifers - with a network of paths that wind through without feeling overcrowded, even on weekends.

There's something satisfying about forests like this. They're not dramatic or Instagram-worthy, but they're real. You get decent woodland walks of varying lengths, the canopy does its job filtering the light nicely, and if you're lucky you'll spot deer or at least hear evidence of proper forestry work happening. Families with younger kids will find it manageable enough for a couple of hours; older walkers could easily spend half a day here without running out of path.

The main draw is honestly the peace. Hockley doesn't have the visitor infrastructure of bigger attractions - no cafe, no car park with facilities - which means it stays quiet. Access details can be sketchy, so best to check locally in Alresford or ask at your holiday park before heading out. If you're staying at The Spinney, Woodlands Camping, or any of the glamping sites within five miles, this makes a solid addition to a walking itinerary without needing to drive across the county.

Worth an afternoon if you're in the area and fancy stretching your legs properly. Not worth a special trip from further afield, but perfect if you're already based nearby.
