Hob Hurst's House

Standing stones circle a Bronze Age burial site on the moors above Matlock - that's Hob Hurst's House in its simplest terms. The name comes from local folklore about a hobgoblin who supposedly lived here, though the reality is far more ancient and atmospheric. Nine upright stones mark what was once a stone circle, with a burial cairn at the centre that archaeologists believe dates back around 4,000 years. Only about half the original stones remain standing, but there's something properly evocative about this windswept spot on Harland Edge. The views across the Derwent Valley are cracking on a clear day. History enthusiasts will appreciate the site's significance as one of Derbyshire's better-preserved Bronze Age monuments, while families might find it makes a decent stop during a moorland walk rather than a destination in itself. Kids could easily explore it in twenty minutes before getting restless. Access is free and always open, though you'll need to park roadside and walk across rough ground - not ideal for pushchairs. The site works well as part of a day exploring the area around Chatsworth Park Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or Darwin Forest, both under three miles away. Just don't expect English Heritage-style interpretation boards - this is raw archaeology in a working landscape.
