Hisehope Linn (Waterfall)

Water crashes down a decent drop into a rocky pool, and that's the whole appeal of Hisehope Linn - a proper little waterfall tucked away near Consett in County Durham. Nothing fancy, nothing touristy. You get there via a short walk through woodland, and when it's wet, the cascade is genuinely impressive. The pool below is deep enough that locals actually swim in it during summer, though the temperature would test your resolve.

This is a walker's spot, really. Five minutes of forest path from the nearest access point and you're there - no scrambling required, no complicated navigation. Families with younger kids could manage it fine on a dry day. Older children who like exploring might find it worth the outing, particularly if you're already in the area. Don't expect a visitor centre or facilities. It's just the waterfall, the rocks, and some decent photo opportunities if the light's right.

Worth the detour if you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Bonners Lodge or Village Green Holiday Park both sit within a couple of miles - and planning a day of walking the broader area. On its own it's not a full afternoon out, but as part of a proper ramble through the Durham countryside it works well. Go after heavy rain when the water flow is proper dramatic. Summer visits can feel a bit underwhelming if there's been dry weather.
