Hippo Pool

The Hippo Pool sits on the River Severn just outside Bewdley, and it's exactly what it sounds like - a deeper section of water where hippos were once kept at a now-defunct wildlife park. Whether that legacy interests you or not, the spot itself is genuinely pleasant for a riverside walk. The pool is best approached from the Bewdley side, where you'll find a relatively easy footpath along the bank with decent views across the water.

It's not a destination that demands half a day. Twenty minutes to walk down, have a look, and turn back suits most people. Kids tend to find the hippo history amusing rather than thrilling - don't expect to see any animals still there. The real appeal lies in the wider walk along the Severn, which has good paths through this part of Worcestershire.

Riverside walks work well if you're based at one of the nearby parks. Hopleys Family Camping (under two miles away) would give you easy access, and Little Lakes Holiday Park sits just two and a half miles north if you want something with slightly more facilities. Bank Farm, a bit further out at four miles, is worth knowing about too.

Go in autumn when the riverside trees turn, or early spring before the paths get muddy. Summer can feel a bit overgrown around here. Free to visit, obviously - it's just a river walk. Not essential if you're short on time, but a solid half-hour detour if you're already in Bewdley.
