Hills and Holes NNR

The landscape around Stamford looks like someone's taken a potato masher to the earth. Hills and Holes Nature Reserve is exactly what its name suggests - a patchwork of ancient ironstone quarries that have, over centuries, morphed into something genuinely unusual. You're walking through hollows and hillocks carved out by medieval miners, now softened by woodland and rough grassland that's become a proper haven for wildlife.

It's the sort of place that rewards a slow wander rather than a quick tick-box visit. The terrain is uneven underfoot - hence "holes" - so families with young children might find it a bit fiddly, but older kids and anyone who enjoys a gentle ramble will find it absorbing. History enthusiasts get a genuine kick out of reading the landscape itself, spotting where the quarrying happened, understanding how people extracted iron centuries ago.

The reserve is free to access, though exact opening times aren't widely published - it's very much a walk-in nature reserve rather than a managed visitor attraction. Allow a good hour or ninety minutes to explore properly without rushing. It's a short drive from Stamford itself, and combines well with a stay at one of the nearby glamping sites like The Nest or Stamford Meadows if you're basing yourself in the area. Rockingham Forest Park is also close by if you want a longer holiday with multiple nature spots to explore. Visit in spring or early summer when the wildflowers are out - the contrast between the geological drama and the delicate flora is quite striking.
