Hill of Fortrose

The walk up to this hillside viewpoint takes twenty minutes, maybe less if you're keen. It's not a slog - more of a gentle climb through rough grass with the Black Isle spreading out below you as you gain height. On a clear day, the view across the Moray Firth is something special, the water shifting between grey and blue depending on the light.

Fortrose itself is a quiet seaside village, the kind where you can actually hear the gulls. That's the real pull of it - not a dramatic peak or anything, but a proper local spot where you can stretch your legs without committing to a full day's walking.

Historically minded visitors might appreciate the fact that Fortrose Cathedral sits at the base of the hill, though the ruins are modest. The hill itself is free to access, no gates or barriers. Go in the morning if you want to avoid the wind that can pick up something fierce off the water in the afternoon.

Families with younger kids will manage it fine - the gradient never gets steep. It's the sort of place you'd pop up for views rather than spend hours exploring.
