Glenurquhart, Long Cairn

A Bronze Age cairn sits on moorland near Fortrose, the kind of place that makes you realise how many thousands of years of human occupation are scattered across the Highlands. Glenurquhart Long Cairn is precisely what its name suggests - a stone burial mound, though "long" is relative; it's modest compared to some Neolithic monuments, but the setting is what gets you.

There's not much to do here beyond walk up to it and stand around puzzling over the stones, which is either exactly your speed or completely not. Archaeology enthusiasts and history types will find themselves proper engaged, thinking about Bronze Age burial rites and what the view meant to people five thousand years ago. Families with young kids might find it a bit underwhelming - there's no interpretation board, no visitor centre, just moorland and rocks. Access is straightforward from Fortrose, though you'll need to navigate rough ground to reach it. Allow an hour maximum, including the walk. Go on a clear day - the landscape matters more than the monument itself.
