Hill of Barra

The walk up Hill of Barra near Inverurie is genuinely rewarding - it's not some exhausting Highland slog, but it's steep enough that you feel like you've earned the views. From the summit, you get proper panoramic stuff across Aberdeenshire: rolling farmland, the distant mountains, and on a clear day the visibility is excellent.

It's a decent half-day walk for families with older kids or anyone who enjoys a bit of uphill graft without technical climbing. The path is straightforward enough, though it can be boggy after rain. Most people allow an hour and a half to two hours return, depending on fitness. There's free access and no visitor facilities at the top, so bring water and something to eat.
