Hill of Auchlee

The walk up Auchlee doesn't take long, but the views across Deeside are worth the effort. It's a proper hill rather than a mountain - steep in places, manageable in others - and from the top you get a real sense of how the land rolls away toward the Cairngorms. The path isn't marked brilliantly, so go with a map or stick to the main track if you're visiting with younger kids.

This is the sort of hill that works best for walkers who want something achievable without needing all day. An hour up, twenty minutes down, plus time to catch your breath at the summit. The landscape is classic Scottish - heather, rough grass, the occasional rocky outcrop - and on a clear day you can pick out the wider Deeside valley. It's not dramatic, but it's honest terrain.

The nearest base is Cults, just a few miles away, and if you're staying at Deeside Holiday Park you're perfectly placed for a morning walk here before heading elsewhere. The park itself sits in good walking country, and Auchlee makes a decent warm-up if you're planning bigger hills later. Free to visit, no facilities at the top, so bring water. Early morning or late afternoon light suits it best - the hill doesn't have the drama for midday visits. Worth doing once if you're in the area, particularly if you're breaking up a longer holiday with a mix of activities.
