Boswell's Monument

A granite obelisk stands alone on a windswept hillside near Cults, marking the spot where James Boswell, Johnson's biographer, once walked. It's not the sort of monument that dominates the landscape - more a quiet nod to an 18th-century literary friendship than a grand statement. The view across Deeside from here is genuinely lovely, though the walk to reach it involves a decent trudge across moorland, so bring proper boots.

This site appeals mainly to history enthusiasts and literature types who've read Boswell's journals. If you're just after a pleasant stroll with a view, you'll get that too, but the monument itself won't take long to photograph. The real value is in the walk itself and the sense of where literary history actually happened, away from Edinburgh's polished streets.

There's no visitor centre or facilities here - it's very much a self-guided spot. Admission is free, naturally. Allow an hour or so for the walk and a proper look around. The best time is clear weather; fog rolls in quick and does nobody favours.

It works well as part of a broader Deeside exploration. If you're staying at Deeside Holiday Park just down the road, it's a worthwhile half-day outing to stretch your legs and connect with something real rather than packaged. Pair it with a walk along the River Dee itself - the Deeside walks are the real draw for most visitors, and this monument is the literary bonus if you're into that sort of thing.
