Hill House Wood

The woodland floor here is thick with moss and last season's leaves - proper spongy underfoot in winter, which makes the walking either brilliant or boggy depending on when you visit. Hill House Wood spreads across the slopes above Hebden Bridge, a genuine slice of working woodland rather than the manicured sort you find closer to towns. The paths wind through a mix of broadleaf and conifer, with stream gullies cutting through at odd angles that keep you paying attention to where you're treading.

It's the kind of place walkers actually use rather than photograph. The nearest proper settlement is Hebden Bridge itself, which sits just below, so you're never far from coffee or a decent pub if you want one. Most people come here as part of a longer route across the moors rather than making it a standalone destination - that's not a knock, just the reality. You'll spot families on weekends and the odd dog walker mid-week. Allow an hour to hour and a half to properly explore without rushing.

The woodland opens up occasionally to views back down the valley, which saves it from feeling claustrophobic. It's free to access, no visitor centre or anything like that. If you're camping at Old Chamber Camping just up the road, this is genuinely convenient for a morning or late afternoon walk before dinner. Go when it's actually dry if possible - mud here is the proper sticky kind that doesn't leave your boots at the gate.
